About Group Therapy
Many people find the healing process easier around others with similar experiences. A group membership gives you the feeling that you belong somewhere. As social beings we all would like to be a part of a community. A trauma – like a loss – can rip you out of everyday social groups: you feel like no one knows your pain, no one can understand what you are going through.
Secondly, other group members can help you with advice, you can learn from their previous experiences too. Everyone is actively helping each person: it means you get help and you give help at the same time. Giving help has not just a positive effect on your mental health but also gives you connections with reality which you may have lost due to traumas.
Additionally group sessions give the safe platform to everyone to practice new behaviours in social situations. Perhaps the best known form of group therapy is related to addictions. However, this method is excellent for loss processing, postpartum depression and in many cases even for learning relaxation techniques against anxiety.
