Online therapy – the pros and cons of healing through online sessions

2 minutes read time

I was very sceptical about working online before 2019. I was sure it can’t be as effective than seeing someone in person. How could I build a therapeutic relationship via Skype? How would I use my great collection of assessment tools and tasks? The world pandemic had a negative effect on my mental health and I have found myself looking for a psychologist, due to the special circumstances: online.

It was not only helpful to deal with the life crisis caused by the isolation but a very useful experience as a therapist. I have learned that my own room can be a safe place to talk, that empathy helps no matter how far we are from each other. There are limitations but not as much as I imagined, and the benefits are very clear and visible. Later, I have not only started to work with people online, but I also have had a very successful CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) online while fighting my phobia. That proved me that even intensive emotions can be held and dealt with via computers/ phones. You can read more about CBT here.

Benefits of online therapy

  • Accessibility – you can reach out for help without worrying about geographical barriers. You might live in remote areas or have difficulties with commuting for any reason, so online services are crucial for you.
  • Convenience & flexibility – scheduling online appointments is easier and more flexible which allows you to have more consistent and frequent sessions.
  • Affordability – you can save on transportation cost and gain free time without the extra traveling
  • Privacy – you might have a higher sense of privacy in the comfort on your own home. Sometimes your mental state does not allow you to leave the house, but you do not need to stay alone anymore.
  • Continuity of care – the online platforms ensure that we can keep in touch in case one of us relocates or travels

Possible limitations

  • Technological requirements – you need reliable internet connectivity and a compatible device
  • Building therapeutic relationship – you might find it challenging to connect with me and establish the bond that we need to work together.

It is very important that you are comfortable with the circumstances of the therapy. I offer online and in-person appointments to make sure my services meet your unique needs and preferences. Feel free to contact me for more information here.
